Introductory pricing has put Mitsubishi's new Outlander Sport HEV under the $40k mark for Kiwi customers when it arrives in December. The special sticker of $39,990 for the XLS 2WD model is for a "limited time" says the company; it has not specified how long it will run for or what the full retail price will be.
“The arrival of Outlander Sport starts an exciting period for Mitsubishi in New Zealand,” says Mitsubishi Motors NZ chief operating officer Tony Johnston. “With Outlander Sport, ASX VR-e and Pajero all arriving before Christmas, we’re bringing Kiwi drivers three very different new choices in a matter of weeks.”
Outander Sport is Mitsubishi New Zealand's first full hybrid (non-plug-in, aka HEV), slotting underneath the Outlander (which is available as a PHEV).
The two-model line-up comprises the XLS and higher-specification VRX, the latter available at $46,990 or $48,490 for a two-tone exterior finish.
Outlander Sport uses Mitsubishi’s "Generation 2 HEV" powertrain, combining a 1.6-litre petrol engine with an 85kW electric motor. The system automatically selects the most efficient combination of electric and petrol power according to driving conditions and battery charge, with regenerative braking helping to recharge the battery while driving.
Combined fuel consumption of 4.0l/100km and CO₂ emissions of 95g/km (WLTP) applies across the range.
There are seven selectable drive modes: Normal, Tarmac, Wet, Gravel and Mud, plus EV Priority and Charge (which forces the petrol engine to power-up the battery while driving).
At 4390mm long and 1810mm wide, Outlander Sport fits in between the ASX compact-SUV and larger Outlander (which which it shares nothing apart from the name).
Rear passengers get a flat floor and 8-position reclining seatback, which is also split 40/20/40. The boot is 329 litres, with a further 21 litres of underfloor storage.
A panoramic glass roof with electric sunshade is standard on both models.
The XLS has a 12.3-inch infotainment screen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 8-inch digital driver display, dual-zone climate control, Active Yaw Control, reversing camera and 18-inch alloy wheels.
VRX adds Dynamic Sound Yamaha Premium audio, wireless phone charging, ambient lighting, Multi Around View Monitor, a six-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and hands-free power tailgate.
Six exterior colours are available: Rose Red, Volt Yellow, Graphite Grey, Aspiring White, Blade Silver and Pitch Black, with five contrasting black-roof combinations available on the VRX model.
