It's official: in a significant shake-up at Red Bull Racing's junior team, RB, New Zealand’s own Liam Lawson will replace Daniel Ricciardo for the rest of the Formula One season.
Lawson, who has been the reserve driver since 2022, is set to race alongside Yuki Tsunoda, starting with the United States Grand Prix in Austin.
Lawson, 22, made his Grand Prix debut at the Belgian Grand Prix in Zandvoort in 2023, stepping in for Ricciardo after the Australian was sidelined due to injury.
Over a five-race stint, the Kiwi impressed with his performance, including a strong ninth-place finish at the Singapore Grand Prix. The decision to promote Lawson for the final six races highlights Red Bull’s commitment to nurturing their young talent, giving him a chance to prove himself against the in-form Tsunoda, who has had a standout season.
Ricciardo leaves RB
Earlier this week, Red Bull and RB confirmed that Ricciardo, a fan-favourite and F1 veteran, would not be returning to the grid this season. "Everyone here at VCARB would like to thank Daniel for his hard work across the last two seasons with us," said team boss Laurent Mekies. "He has brought a lot of experience and talent to the team with a fantastic attitude... Daniel has been a true gentleman both on and off the track."
Ricciardo's tenure at the team, marked by professionalism and positivity, has left an indelible mark on the squad.
What's next for Liam Lawson?
Lawson’s promotion comes as a chance for the team to gauge his potential against Tsunoda, who has already secured his seat for next season. As Mekies stated, "It’s great to see young talent from within the Red Bull family make the next step."
The next few races will be crucial for Lawson’s future prospects in Formula One as RB evaluates his potential long-term role in the team.
If RB likes what they see, Lawson might even have a strong chance for a permanent seat at the grid for the 2025 F1 season.
