Volvo has once again refined its flagship SUV, revealing the 2025 XC90 with substantial upgrades in technology, performance and safety.
This new model, particularly in its plug-in hybrid (PHEV) form, demonstrates the Swedish automaker’s commitment to sustainability while preserving the luxury and safety features that have made the XC90 a household name.
PHEV with extended electric range
The 2025 XC90 PHEV brings improved hybrid performance to the table, offering an electric-only range of over 70km under the WLTP testing cycle.
In real-world conditions, Volvo claims that around 48% of all driving in its plug-in hybrids is done on electric power alone, highlighting the efficiency gains possible for urban users.
Beyond its electric capabilities, the XC90 is equipped with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that works in tandem with the electric motor. Combined, the all-wheel-drive system delivers a formidable 340kW and 709Nm of torque, which is more than enough to handle a variety of driving scenarios - from urban commuting to long-distance highway driving.
This powerful setup enables the XC90 to accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in just under 5.5 seconds, impressive for a vehicle of its size and class.
One of the XC90’s standout features is its ability to perform on extended journeys. When the electric range is depleted, the petrol engine takes over, offering more than 800km of range from a full fuel tank. With fuel consumption figures around 8.6 litres per 100 km (once the electric charge is used up), the XC90 offers an excellent balance between economy and practicality.
Design enhancements for 2025
Visually, the 2025 XC90 hasn’t undergone radical changes, but it carries subtle updates that underscore Volvo’s transition towards electrification. The front grille has been streamlined for improved aerodynamics, and the vehicle’s overall silhouette reflects a modern, sleek design in line with Volvo’s fully electric EX90.
Inside, the cabin is where Volvo’s attention to detail truly shines. A reconfigured dashboard now features a horizontal layout with premium recycled materials, reinforcing Volvo’s sustainability ethos.
One of the most notable updates is the 14.5-inch central touchscreen, which is now larger and sharper than in previous models. This screen serves as the hub for Volvo’s latest infotainment system, which supports a range of apps and over-the-air (OTA) updates - ensuring the car’s software is always up-to-date without needing a trip to the dealer.
A focus on safety
Volvo’s reputation for safety is well-earned, and the 2025 XC90 sets the bar even higher. The SUV is equipped with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), including features like automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection and lane-keeping assist.
These systems are supported by radar and a front-facing camera, which help monitor the road for potential hazards.
One of the standout safety features is Volvo’s 'Oncoming Lane Mitigation' system. This uses the vehicle’s cameras to detect if the car drifts into an oncoming lane and automatically steers it back, reducing the risk of a head-on collision.
The XC90 also comes with off-road protection, including systems that prevent unintentional road departures and assist in controlling the vehicle during challenging conditions.
New Zealand availability
This latest update to the XC90 shows that Volvo remains focused on safety, innovation and sustainability, all while delivering a luxurious and performance-oriented driving experience that sets the bar high in the hybrid SUV market.
The 2025 Volvo XC90 is available for order now, with production scheduled to begin in late 2024. New Zealand customers can expect to see the first models arriving towards the end of the year. Pricing will be announced closer to the vehicle's launch date.
