Volvo is set to revitalise the in-car experience for over 2.5 million of its vehicles with a comprehensive infotainment system update.

This free, over-the-air (OTA) software upgrade, rolling out next year, will modernise the digital interface of models manufactured from 2020 onwards that feature an Android operating system.

Enhanced usability and functionality

Inspired by the system first introduced in the facelifted XC90, the updated software boasts a more user-friendly layout.

Frequently used apps and controls are relocated to the home screen for quicker access, mirroring the interface found in Volvo's electric vehicles (EVs). This streamlined design aims to reduce the number of taps needed to reach essential features like Google Maps and media controls.

A new bottom bar also provides convenient access to recently used apps and a dedicated button to activate the car's exterior cameras at any time.

While the new software premiered on the XC90 with a larger 28-cm touchscreen, it has been thoughtfully adapted to suit the various screen sizes and shapes found in older models.

"Our new-generation user experience will deliver a significant improvement in customer experience and is an important step in our journey to delivery human-centric technology solutions to our customers,” stated Erik Severinson, Chief Product and Strategy Officer at Volvo Cars.

This ambitious update underscores Volvo's dedication to keeping its vehicles at the forefront of technology. The company plans to continuously improve the user experience through further over-the-air updates, ensuring that Volvo cars evolve and improve over time.

Models included in the update

This move by Volvo is a significant step towards enhancing the digital experience for its customers, proving that even older vehicles can benefit from the latest technological advancements.

The update will encompass a wide range of Volvo models, including the C40, XC40, EX40, EC40, S60, V60, V60 Cross Country, XC60, S90, V90, V90 Cross Country and XC90.
