Tesla has finally unveiled the 2025 Model Y 'Juniper', marking its most significant update since the electric SUV's launch in 2019.
The refreshed Model Y starts at $73,100 in New Zealand and introduces a sharper design, interior upgrades, improved driving dynamics with enhanced efficiency, aiming to retain its position as the world’s bestselling electric vehicle (EV).
Cybertruck-inspired styling
Tesla has embraced a bold new design language for the Model Y.
The redesigned front end features split headlights and a sleek full-width LED bar reminiscent of the Cybertruck and Cybercab.
Tesla’s minimalist philosophy extends to the absence of a hood emblem, with subtle side intakes and a refined bumper shape completing the futuristic look.
At the rear, the sci-fi aesthetic continues with a dark-finished taillight unit and Tesla’s first “indirect reflective body panel taillight.” The tailgate redesign integrates smoothly into the bumper, accompanied by a larger rear diffuser.
While the overall dimensions are similar, the Model Y’s length has increased by 41mm to 4792 mm.
New 20-inch Helix 2.0 wheels are standard, while 19-inch Crossflow wheels are offered in select markets. A fresh Glacier Blue shade replaces the darker Deep Blue metallic, adding an elegant touch to the exterior.
A refined, tech-forward cabin
Inside, the Model Y retains its minimalist style but introduces key refinements.
A larger 15.4-inch infotainment screen takes centre stage, paired with an 8-inch display for rear passengers.
Improved seating offers greater comfort, with ventilated front seats and a power-reclining rear bench that folds flat for practicality.
Ambient lighting, vegan suede inserts and soft-touch finishes elevate the cabin’s premium feel.
Unlike the Model 3 'Highland', the Model Y 'Juniper' keeps the indicator stalk, though gear selection moves to the infotainment display.
Meanwhile, a revamped audio system promises a richer sound experience with hidden speakers.
Enhanced performance and efficiency
Tesla’s tweaks to the Model Y include aerodynamic improvements, new acoustic glass, retuned suspension and quieter tyres. The chassis updates deliver a smoother, more responsive ride.
Two trims are available at launch: the entry-level RWD and the Long Range AWD. Estimated WLTP ranges are 466km and 551km, respectively - modest gains over the previous model.
Acceleration has improved, with the RWD sprinting from 0 to 100km/h in 5.9 seconds, while the Long Range AWD achieves the same in 4.3 seconds. Both trims have a top speed of 201km/h.
Pricing and availability
The updated Model Y is available for order in select Asia-Pacific regions, including New Zealand, with deliveries beginning from April 2025.
Local pricing opens at $73,100 for the RWD model, with the Long Range AWD model starting at $83,100. Autopilot packages start at $5,700 for Enhanced Autopilot, with Full Self-Driving Capability (FSD) set at $11,400.
Tesla is also set to expand the lineup with a Performance trim in the coming months, featuring adaptive damping, Track Mode V3 and a power boost to further solidify the Model Y’s dominance in the EV market.
