I needed a car with 4WD, able to tow a trailer, easy to clean seats, and a large boot. The Outback ticks all the boxes.

What were your initial thoughts about the car? Tell us why it appealed to you.

It tows well but as long as you don't have too much weight. The revs to climb when going over large hills but the trade off is the great fuel consumption. Very comfortable car to drive and handles well for an SUV. The easy clean seats have become more in handy for my sons rather than my grandchildren. Easy to clean coffee off seats as well as ice cream.

What have you discovered since owning the car?

The power is better than I thought even though it is not the turbo version. Great on gas. The boot holds much more than my old Harrier despite it "looking" smaller. There is tons of leg room in the back even for someone over six feet.

What do you like/dislike about the car?

Alot of the safety stuff can get annoying. It beeps and dings even when looking for cars at roundabouts as it thinks you're not watching the road. It is on the expensive side for a car this size.

Any other comments on the car?

Love the car. Does everything I want in comfort. Goes really well off road in deep mud even with a trailer. Very easy to drive and the colour is great - Autumn metallic green.

Does everything I need a car to do. Very comfortable. Low on gas. Tows well and the huge boot is very handy.

Subaru Outback 2.5i 2012

(including all on-road costs) 12000 What were your needs when you bought this car? Has it fulfilled those needs? Needed a car with lots of space to fit lots of gear for work and for road trips. I also wanted a car with more power than my previous car, 2.0l and over. This car has suited those needs perfectly. Also something with good safety features e.g. radar cruise and collision detection. What were your initial thoughts about the car? Tell us why it appealed to you. Like it. I really liked the bodywork (I actually have a legacy but there was no option), i think it's a sleek looking car. I liked the AWD capabilities, power and handling. I am a big fan of the eyesight technology which has saved me from multiple crashes since buying the car. What have you discovered since owning the car? I have discovered that the CVT transmission in the car is not exactly ideal - would prefer more instant power access. Everything else about it is perfect, I like the amount of technology loaded into the car. Radar cruise is very impressive for it's age, lane and collision warnings are also very helpful. The interior is a little plasticky but I knew that going into things, it is well made, but obviously cheaply made. What do you like/dislike about the car? I like the technology, power and handling. I like the crash detection and the eyesight technology. I dislike the CVT, poor quality interior, and the headlights yellow quickly. Any other comments on the car? No, I love it. just in regards to the below performance/economy, performance is great, economy is terrible. lol Reliability 5 Features/technology 5 Performance/economy 3 Value for money 5 Overall rating 4 Lastly, would you buy this vehicle again? No Why would/wouldn't you buy it again? I would buy something with a hybrid drivetrain most likely. Nothing against the Legacy, i think it is a really good car that has served me very well.

Has it fulfilled those needs? Family car, we wanted to be able to tow a caravan or trailer for holidays as well as general round town use. It’s a great all rounder. What were your initial thoughts about the car? Tell us why it appealed to you. Reliable brand which was very well priced. Good Off road capability, all wheel drive. Good looking. Safety rating excellent. Water resistant seats a bonus. What have you discovered since owning the car? If you leave the boot open when you are camping, you can flatten the battery, because all the doors have lights in them. Oops. What do you like/dislike about the car? Love everything about it. Great visibility, good road clearance, heated seats. Auto seat positions for two drivers. All the lane assist and cruise control features are good. It feels very sporty for a station wagon. Any other comments on the car? We bought the X variant because you could get all the higher spec features without having to go for the 2.5L model or the premium model that involves leather seats. Yes Why would/wouldn't you buy it again? It is just such good value for money compared to other SUVs that do the same thing. Plus it has true off road cred, including being able to ford streams and not get wet. Fantastic.

(including all on-road costs) 24000 What were your needs when you bought this car? Has it fulfilled those needs? We needed a station wagon to carry people and luggage. We needed to tow trailer or a boat. We wanted vehicle that could fit inside normal house garage. Also to carry tools and long pieces timber electrical etc. We wanted a vehicle that we could carry whiteware dishwasher furniture etc and keep it dry. Utes carry very small items they very short in tray so also can not carry what we wanted. What were your initial thoughts about the car? Tell us why it appealed to you. This car has NA engine 3.6 normal automatic. So can tow it is not high off ground so drives nice. It doesn't give you motion sickness like ute or cvt transmission car. As it normal sized car it fits in garage and in car parks . Utes are so oversized you can not open door to get in and also causes other people issues getting into their car. What have you discovered since owning the car? It works exactly as we needed. It drives as normal car in fact outstanding feedback on open road. It does all that we needed in beginning. What do you like/dislike about the car? We like that we don't need trailer to pick up most equipment we hire or buy. We can leave our suitcases or gear in wagon and it feels safer. It drives great as normal touring car. Plenty power to overtake. It has 65 profile tires so yes a bit soft but can hit all potholes with out breaking rims. Couple issues we dislike is cruise control is horrible slows car down going around bends or curves. Unsettles car . Fuel usage is quite reasonable we get 700 km to tank easy on trip around town drops to under 500 . But still has average of around 10 litres. Any other comments on the car? It has been very reliable. The early issues that Subarus had with wheel bearings are gone. Servicing costs are average. We had couple issues with steering as all Subarus of that year but we managed to repair for reasonable cost. If Subaru still made normal transmission car that can tow would buy again. We would buy same style car if it was still made. Not sure what to replace it with. We have bought small Toyota as run around to make wagon last longer.
