McLaren is inching closer to a new hypercar as it remembers its past.

In the lead-up to their new hypercar reveal, McLaren has launched a video series that revisits the legendary F1 from 1992 and the electrified P1 from 2013.

As excitement builds for the forthcoming model, McLaren remains tight-lipped about specific details, but the tribute to their iconic range-toppers hints at what’s to come.

McLaren’s legendary flagship cars

Maurizio Zagarella, McLaren’s Fleet Manager and an engineer who played a key role in both the F1 and P1's development, features prominently in the series. Zagarella recalls the original intent behind the F1: to create "the fastest car in the world".

This 1992 icon set new benchmarks for performance, boasting a revolutionary design that remains a hallmark in the world of supercars.

Meanwhile, the P1, launched over two decades later, redefined hypercar performance with its focus on “unmatched aerodynamic efficiency”.

According to Zagarella, it remains "one of the most technically complex cars ever created". Despite the technological advancements between the two, Zagarella notes that both models are "connected through their DNA", each pushing the boundaries of what was achievable.

McLaren is already working on their next hypercar, expected to launch in 2026. Codenamed the P18, this model will reportedly feature a hybrid V8 powertrain, developed in partnership with UK-based engineering firm Ricardo.

The new hybrid system is said to be 70% lighter than the current setup, thanks to a high-density battery derived from Formula One technology.

A carbon-fibre monocoque, advanced chassis system, and active aerodynamics are all expected to ensure cutting-edge performance.

The design will follow McLaren’s latest design language, likely shaping the future aesthetic of their entire lineup.

While the new hypercar will see a production run of 400 units, making it less exclusive than the F1 (106 units) and P1 (375 units), it will still carry a hefty price tag - around $3 million.

With McLaren’s legacy of innovation and performance, the upcoming model is poised to become a prized possession for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
