In a brilliant mashup of childhood dreams and cutting-edge engineering, The Lego Group and McLaren Automotive have turned imagination into reality.
Together, these companies have built a life-size, driveable McLaren P1 out of Lego Technic bricks - and who better to take it for a spin than McLaren Formula One star Lando Norris?
A blocky beast
This is no ordinary Lego car.
Crafted from a jaw-dropping 342,817 Lego Technic pieces, this life-sized McLaren P1 is a fully functional electric vehicle (EV) weighing a hefty 1220kg.
The cherry on top?
It’s capable of steering and cornering, making it the first of its kind. "It’s amazing to see so many of the elements from the original McLaren P1 brought to life so realistically by the Lego Technic team," said Ben Gulliver from McLaren Automotive, reflecting on this incredible achievement.
After 8344 hours of development, design and assembly by a dedicated team of 23 specialists, the Lego Technic McLaren P1 was ready to face its ultimate challenge - a lap around the legendary Silverstone Circuit.
And Lando Norris, grinning ear to ear, was more than eager to take this brick-built beast for a spin.
Lego car, but make it driveable
The Lego McLaren P1 is a marvel of mini-engineering.
Featuring a fully functional electric motor powered by Lego Technic Function batteries, the car has eight motor packs - each with 96 Lego Power Function motors - making it the fastest (and only) Lego car to complete a lap of a racetrack.
"McLaren's automotive and engineering expertise has been invaluable," noted Lukáš Horák of the Lego Group, emphasising the collaboration that made this dream a reality.
Norris navigated Silverstone's iconic twists and turns, proving this isn't just a LEGO model for your shelf - it's a LEGO model for the track! With the legendary 5.891 km circuit as the backdrop, the life-size Lego P1 celebrated McLaren's rich racing heritage while setting a playful tone for the future of automotive innovation.
From Silverstone to your living room
Can’t get enough of this epic build? While the life-size P1 won't fit in your garage, the 1:8 scale Lego Technic McLaren P1 set can definitely find a spot on your display shelf.
This intricate model comes with a seven-speed gearbox, a V8 piston engine and even adjustable dihedral doors. Packed with 3893 pieces, this set is a supercar lover’s dream in brick form. It's now available for US$449.99 (around NZ$730).
