Suzuki steps into EV territory with the new eVitara.

Suzuki has unveiled its first-ever fully electric vehicle (EV), the eVitara, which is also set to form the foundation of a new EV from Toyota.

Produced in India and slated for international export, the eVitara represents Suzuki’s commitment to the EV market as competitors, paradoxically, begin to pull back from electric expansion.

This front-wheel-drive EV offers two powertrain options with differing battery capacities and motor outputs, setting a new standard for Suzuki.

Power and performance options

The Suzuki eVitara provides a choice between a 49kWh battery with a 106kW motor and a 61kWh version paired with a 128kW motor, both configured for front-wheel drive (FWD).

For those seeking added traction, the larger battery variant can be fitted with all-wheel drive (AWD), achieved through a secondary 48kW rear motor, culminating in a combined output of 135kW and 300Nm of torque.

Although this setup raises the eVitara’s weight by nearly 200kg compared to the FWD variant, the added torque should enhance grip and stability.

Spacious dimensions and modern interior

Distinguished from its combustion-powered Vitara counterpart, the eVitara is constructed on Suzuki’s Heartect-e EV platform.

It adopts a more robust stance with expanded dimensions, measuring 4275 mm in length - 100 mm longer than the combustion-powered Vitara - and a wheelbase of 2700mm. This increased footprint promises a more spacious interior, complemented by a sleek dashboard dominated by an integrated digital instrument cluster and touchscreen.

Suzuki claims that the cabin’s finish, described as “robust-looking,” aims to evoke a “High-tech and adventure” feel.

The interior includes Suzuki’s Allgrip-e system, equipped with a Trail mode designed to simulate a limited-slip differential through brake modulation, potentially enhancing off-road capability.

However, whether it can match the off-road prowess of Suzuki’s Jimny remains to be seen.

Production of the Suzuki eVitara will commence in spring 2025 at Suzuki’s Gujarat plant in India. Sales are expected to begin in Europe, India and Japan around mid-year.

Toyota's version of the SUV, anticipated to share much of the eVitara’s design and structure, is expected to debut soon, building on the Urban SUV concept showcased in 2023.
