One of Ferrari's most celebrated race cars, the 1964 Ferrari 250 LM by Scaglietti, is set to hit the auction block at RM Sotheby’s Paris event in early February 2025.

With an estimated value exceeding €25 million (around NZ$46.1 million), this extraordinary machine represents a defining chapter in motorsport history.

Chassis number 5893 is no ordinary Ferrari. It remains the only privately entered Ferrari to claim outright victory at the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans, triumphing over factory-backed competitors in 1965.

Piloted by Masten Gregory and Jochen Rindt under the North American Racing Team (NART) banner, this 250 LM started modestly in 11th place.

Despite an early slip to 18th position, the car capitalised on mechanical failures plaguing its rivals, eventually seizing the lead and holding on until the chequered flag.

More than about speed, the victory was a masterclass in endurance, strategy and resilience, forever etching chassis 5893 into the annals of racing history.

Originally delivered to Luigi Chinetti Motors, the car briefly changed hands before returning to NART for its defining Le Mans campaign.

Post-retirement in 1970, it found a home at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum, where it resided for over five decades.

The Ferrari 250 LM has been meticulously preserved, maintaining its original allure and historical significance. Its rarity is amplified by the fact that only 32 examples of the 250 LM were ever built, making it one of the most exclusive Ferraris in existence.

For collectors and Ferrari enthusiasts, opportunities like this are exceedingly rare. This 250 LM is a tangible piece of motorsport history, representing Ferrari's golden era of endurance racing. With its unparalleled legacy and jaw-dropping valuation, chassis 5893 could set records on the auction floor.
