Just like it says on the tin, Mahindra's new Lifestyler one-tonne ute is aimed at a much broader audience than the famously tough and unashamedly archaic Pik Up it ostensibly replaces.
New Zealand is confirmed as one of the global markets for the new ute, which was revealed as the "Scorpio Lifestyler" this week in India, but will be rebadged as simply "Lifestyler" for export.
According to the the factory, the new ute is "targeting the high-potential midsize lifestyle pickup segment across Australia and NZ, South Africa, Africa, Middle East and Latin America. The Mahindra Lifestyler has been designed as a global product capable of meeting diverse customer needs and market requirements."
The ute is the final production version of a vehicle first seen as a Pik Up concept back in 2023: at that time the company was clear about its ambitions to make its ute more global and become a true rival for the likes of the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux.
It's not scheduled to arrive in NZ until 2027, and Mahindra has not shared any specific technical detail about the new model. But as the Indian-market name suggests, it's based on the ladder-frame architecture of the Scorpio 4x4 SUV, which is currently sold here with a 2.2-litre turbo diesel making 129kW/400Nm. It's thought the Lifestyler might get a power/torque increase over that model, though.
“The Scorpio Lifestyler is inspired by how our customers work, play and explore," says Pratap Bose, chief design and creative officer, Mahindra & Mahindra.
The Lifestyler was unveiled in three different themed versions. The Valley "celebrates purposeful refinement", Reef "embodies freedom and exploration" and Trail "captures the spirit of boundless adventure".
