Subaru New Zealand has confirmed the impending launch of the Trailseeker Touring EV-SUV, which will be in showrooms from September this year.

Trailseeker is part of Subaru's so-called sport electric vehicle (SEV) category.

This pure-electric wagon-style family SUV may come as a bit of a blow to those fans of the brand still fixated on the 1990s: it's officially Subaru's quickest-ever production model, the 280kW dual-motor powertrain sending it to 100km/h in 4.4 seconds.

It's also a Toyota, of course. It's essentially a Solterra wagon, meaning it's Subaru's version of the just-launched Toyota bZ4X Touring.

While Toyota NZ is continuing with both SUV and Touring versions of its bZ4X, Subaru has decided the Solterra will not return to NZ for now, making Trailseeker Touring its sole EV option for Kiwi customers.

“While the all-new Trailseeker joins the updated Solterra, and the all-new Uncharted in Subaru’s global electric range - now united under Subaru’s Sport Electric Vehicle (SEV) category — we will be focusing solely on Trailseeker Touring in NZ at this stage," says Jerry Delaney, general manager of Subaru importer Inchcape NZ.

"Inchcape NZ will be constantly assessing other Subaru EV models and we will keep our customers updated on any changes to our line-up."

Both Toyota bZ4X and Solterrra (on which Trailseeker is based) have been upgraded for 2026.

With 211mm of ground clearance, Subaru says Trailseeker brings "genuine all-terrain confidence".

Power comes from a 74.7kWh battery, delivering range of up to 488km. With 150kW DC fast-charging, Trailseeker can charge from 10-80% in a claimed 30 minutes; it also offers 22kW three-phase AC charging where it's available and 1500W vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability. Trailseeker is rated to tow 1500kg.

Further details on detailed specification and pricing for the all-new, all-electric Subaru Trailseeker will be announced closer to launch. The Toyota bZ4X Touring is priced at $71,990.
