BYD, China’s electric vehicle (EV) and battery manufacturing powerhouse, has confirmed the release of its next-generation Blade EV battery in 2025.
The announcement, made by its managing director for Central Asia Cao Shuang, signals a significant leap forward in battery technology.
“I think in the coming years, 2025, BYD will introduce the new generation of our remarkable Blade battery,” Cao stated in an interview with CGTN, highlighting the company’s ambitions for its new battery technology.
The new Blade battery promises an enhanced driving range and a longer lifecycle. These improvements aim to support both electric vehicle applications and energy storage systems, further solidifying BYD’s role as a global leader in battery technology. The company is also collaborating with partners to explore additional reuse opportunities for the batteries.
First launched in 2020, BYD’s Blade battery is built on lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) chemistry, offering lower production costs compared to traditional lithium-ion alternatives.
This cost efficiency has enabled BYD to produce affordable EV models like the Dolphin electric hatch, which delivers around 400km of range while starting at just $43,990 in New Zealand.
The Blade battery’s success has been pivotal in propelling BYD to its current status as the world’s second-largest EV battery manufacturer, holding 16.4% of the global market share through September 2024. Only CATL, with a commanding 36.7% share, ranks higher.
The battery innovation announcement follows a series of milestones for BYD, including surpassing 10 million new energy vehicles (NEVs) produced and achieving record-breaking monthly sales of over 500,000 units in October. As competitors like CATL advance their technologies, BYD is poised to disrupt the market with its more compact, efficient, and safer next-gen Blade batteries.
With the new Blade battery on the horizon, BYD is not only advancing EV technology but also reinforcing its commitment to sustainable energy solutions despite geopolitical tensions.
