BMW’s new Panoramic iDrive introduces a fresh approach to in-car tech.

BMW’s new Panoramic iDrive introduces a fresh approach to in-car tech.

BMW has unveiled Panoramic iDrive, a next-generation operating system (OS) and display concept at CES 2025 in Las Vegas.

Combining innovative technology with intuitive user interfaces, this feature is set to debut in the Neue Klasse models later this year and will be integrated across all BMW vehicles by 2025.

What is BMW's Panoramic iDrive?

Panoramic iDrive is anchored by a pillar-to-pillar display, which BMW calls Panoramic Vision, projecting key driving information onto a black-printed windscreen surface.

This setup ensures drivers remain focused on the road while offering personalisation options for widgets in central and passenger-facing sections.

The system is complemented by an optional 3D head-up display (HUD), presenting navigation and automated driving alerts directly in the driver’s field of view.

BMW's Senior Vice President Connected Company, Stephan Durach, emphasised the system’s capabilities, stating it "offers intuitive operation, emotionally engaging experiences, and specific personalisation." BMW says drivers can customise everything from display content to ambient lighting colours.

The new multifunction steering wheel replaces BMW’s signature control knob, incorporating haptic feedback buttons for streamlined navigation.

BMW's “shy-tech approach” illuminates relevant controls when needed, enhancing functionality without overwhelming the design.

Powered by the Android-based Operating System X, Panoramic iDrive promises seamless integration of physical and digital elements.

Features like enhanced voice recognition allow natural language commands to guide navigation. Additionally, updates ensure long-term relevance and compatibility with new apps and services.

Through Operating System X, users can upload photos as display backgrounds, select driving modes and receive AI-driven suggestions tailored to their habits.

The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant also leverages large language models (aka AI) for improved interaction and learning capabilities.

Frank Weber, BMW AG’s board member for development, described Panoramic iDrive as "a quarter of a century of pioneering work and technological leadership".

By integrating groundbreaking displays, adaptive technology and a minimalist interface, BMW continues to innovate in modern vehicle design and user experience.

The introduction of Panoramic iDrive highlights BMW's focus on safety, convenience and personalisation for the future of mobility.
