  • The perfect all-rounders, if music ISN'T your priority

For what we like to call “the modern professional”, the daily commute is often more than just a transition between home and work; it is an extension of the office itself.

Whether you consider it a sad indictment of the modern world or true freedom to choose where and when you work, parking up at a rest area trying to jump on a last-minute video conference or taking calls on the go are a fact of life, so a reliable headset is essential.

The Jabra Evolve3 85 headset is built for the modern professional who works wherever the day takes them - but what about a traveller who wants a set of all-rounders for music too?

Entering the market at a premium price of $1249 - although depending on configuration they can be found online from between $800 and $900 - the Jabra Evolve3 85 headset is designed specifically to meet the demands of the mobile office, yet it approaches the challenge with a unique crossover identity that could well make them the perfect pair of headphones that can combine work and relaxation.

This is because, unlike traditional office gear, Jabra has completely stripped away the prominent, call-centre-style boom microphone, opting instead for a sleek, contemporary look that sits naturally alongside high-end consumer headphones.

Slimmer, lighter and easier to pack, the Evolve3 85sare designed with mobile workers in mind.

A major draw for anyone regularly packing a bag or loading up a glovebox is the headset’s remarkable compactness - Jabra has managed to slim the profile by 35 per cent and trim the weight by 23 per cent compared to the previous Evolve2 generation, bringing the total weight down to a featherlight 220 grams.

The flat-folding earcups slide easily into an ultra-thin carrying case, making it an incredibly portable option for travel - literally only around half the thickness of headphones like the JBL Live 780NCs or Sony WH-1000XM6s when folded up in their travel case.

This compact form factor is matched by exceptional comfort, featuring highly breathable mesh fabric-covered earcups and a plushly padded headband that prevents the hot, high-pressure clamp common during long periods of wear.

When folded and stored in their case, the Jabra Evolve3 85s are around half the thickness of other headphones.

Being primarily aimed at office work, the crown jewel of the Evolve3 85’s package is undoubtedly its voice performance, which utilises an array of six digital MEMS microphones paired with AI-driven ClearVoice technology.

The Jabra Evolve3 85s are easily one of the best office headsets you can get today, but what about that other potential upside - the ability to be an all-rounder all-star that handles music and travel as well as work?

According to Jabra, this system is trained on over 60 million sentences to isolate speech and suppress background noise, and in practice, it borders on magical - even in highly challenging acoustic environments, such as a noisy roadside or a bustling local cafe, your voice carries through to callers with pristine, indoor-like clarity.

Exceptional call clarity is where the Jabra Evolve3 85s really earns their premium price tag.

To help prevent you from inadvertently yelling over background noises, the adjustable sidetone feature lets you hear a natural level of your own voice inside the earcups while speaking, while the Evolve3 85s also feature a clever 360-degree red 'busy light' that automatically illuminates when you are on a call, serving as a silent signal to anyone nearby that you are currently on the air.

All of this simply goes to cement the fact that the Jabra Evolve3 85s are easily one of the best office headsets you can get today, but what about that other potential upside - the ability to be an all-rounder all-star that handles music and travel as well as work?

Unfortunately, that is where you will find some compromises. While the active noise cancellation is perfectly adequate for silencing the hum of office equipment or a nearby printer, it is simply not powerful enough to isolate the low-frequency roar of a jet engine or a train carriage.

The Evolve3 85s are available in several variants - ours was the dedicated Miocrosoft Teams model, but a generic one that handles Zoom and Google Meet.

In this regard, it remains a step behind dedicated consumer travel heavyweights like the Sony WH-1000XM6, Bose QuietComfort Ultra, or Apple AirPods Max, while music playback is another area where the Evolve3 85 reveals its enterprise-first DNA.

The midrange where vocals live is beautifully clear, but higher frequencies lack sparkle, and the sound stage is rather narrow and unambitious.

Powered by 32mm drivers, the sound signature is well-balanced for voice and video calls, meetings and podcasts, but can feel slightly flat, narrow, and lacklustre when you crank up your favourite tunes.

Our test unit was also equipped with a USB-C adaptor and the optional wireless charging pad.

The midrange where vocals live is beautifully clear, but higher frequencies lack sparkle, and the sound stage is rather narrow and unambitious. The omission of high-resolution wireless streaming codecs like LDAC or AptX also means it won't satisfy serious audiophiles.

Another feature highlighting its desktop bias, but also their fantastic flexibility, is the optional wireless charging capability - the headset allows you to simply fold the earcups flat and rest them face down on a standard Qi wireless charging pad - with some premium bundles even including a neat, matching charging puck.

While this is an incredibly convenient desk-based luxury, it is ultimately far more at home on your office desk than rattling around in a travel bag or car console, although you can just charge them via a USB-C cable too.

The wireless Qi charging adds a touch of desk-friendly convenience to Jabra's latest professional headset.

However, you probably won’t need to, as the Evolve3 85 offers some truly monumental battery life - you get up to 120 hours of music playback or 25 hours of talk time with active noise cancellation and status lights switched off, and a quick five-minute wired charge via USB-C provides a generous five hours of playback.

Their hefty price tag would be far easier to swallow if you could justify them as a serious upgrade on your work headset and some excellent noise cancelling headphones as well.

Connectivity is seamlessly handled via Bluetooth 5.3 with multipoint pairing to keep you connected to your phone and computer simultaneously, while the package also includes a dedicated USB adapter - a choice of either USB-A or USB-C - for robust wireless range.

Six microphones and AI-powered ClearVoice technology help keep your voice clear, even in noisy environments.

Depending on your business setup, Jabra offers optimised models certified for either Microsoft Teams - complete with a dedicated on-earcup button - or standard Unified Communication variants that are plug-and-play across Zoom and Google Meet.

With their exceptional performance in work-based tasks and exceptional portability, comfort and battery life, the Jabra Evole3 85s are tantalisingly close to being the perfect all-rounders, but their flat, uninspired music reproduction and weak ANC hold them back from the edge of all-round perfection.

Ultimately, it depends on what value you place on music reproduction versus call clarity - there is no doubt that the Evolve3 85s are more than good enough for most people when it comes to music, while their performance in all other regards is utterly exceptional - but their hefty price tag would be far easier to swallow if you could justify them as a serious upgrade on your work headset and some excellent noise cancelling headphones as well.
