Do you recognize the MX-5 under there?

Do you recognize the MX-5 under there?

Many car enthusiasts often get caught up in the world of mainstream vehicle offerings. However, every now and then, a truly unique gem emerges from the shadows, reminding us that there's more to the automotive scene than just the dichotomy of performance versus practicality.

Bones of a Mazda MX-5

2024 Mitsuoka Himiko

Case in point, the 2024 Mitsuoka Himiko, a car that's making waves not only for its quirky styling but also its exclusivity. For those who might have forgotten about the Himiko, it's a car with a rich history dating back to 2008 during the NC era of the Mazda MX-5.

Initially sold as the PRHT model with a power retractable hardtop, the Himiko transitioned to the ND generation in 2018, gaining the standard model's manually operated soft top. Now it's back with a 2024 model year update, and it's making quite an impression.

Limited to just 10 units, the 2024 Mitsuoka Himiko takes a different approach compared to mainstream sports cars. It simplifies its lineup by offering a single trim level, but don't mistake simplicity for lack of features. This unique roadster is a blend of classic British roadster styling and modern amenities.

A pop of colour

One of the standout features is its exterior colour options. While most cars stick to the basics, the Himiko takes a bold step with seven paint finishes to choose from. From the elegant French Mint Pearl Metallic to the striking Passion Red Metallic and Snowflake White Pearl Mica, there's no shortage of options to express your personality.

Stepping inside, you'll find leather upholstery that adds a touch of luxury to the cabin. The front wing emblems and grille badge are applied using the ancient Cloisonné technique, showcasing attention to detail and craftsmanship. Standard equipment includes heated seats, cruise control, traffic sign recognition, navigation, and even a CD/DVD player for those who appreciate the classics.

Now, here's where the Himiko really stands out – its size. Unlike the compact Mazda MX-5 ND2, the Himiko stretches out at 4580mm long, 1740mm wide, and 1235 mm tall. That's substantially larger, making it a unique option for those who desire more space and presence on the road.

Under the hood, you'll find a 1.5-litre gasoline engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. While it might not be the most powerful engine out there, it's a nod to the classic roadsters of yesteryear, prioritising the driving experience over raw speed.

Is it worth it?

However, the question that inevitably arises is, "Is it worth the price?" The 2024 Mitsuoka Himiko comes with a price tag of ¥6,787,000, which roughly converts to nearly $75,000 at current exchange rates. That's significantly more than a 2.0-litre MX-5 GT in New Zealand, which currently starts at $58,290.

While the Himiko might not be everyone's cup of tea, it's essential to remember that it caters to a niche market. So, would you buy the 2024 Mitsuoka Himiko for $75k? It might not be a rational choice, but for those who seek a blend of classic charm and modern comfort, it could be a worthy addition to their garage.
