Porsche has released the first trailer for a new documentary about a Porsche 911 that set a world record as the highest earthbound vehicle ever.

The car, driven by Romain Dumas, reached the summit of Ojos del Salado, the tallest volcano in the world and the documentary reveals the story behind the achievement, which was the result of over four years of effort and three attempts, involving two cars.

Independent filmmakers TangentVector documented the entire adventure, with the support of Porsche, to create a film that provides what it says is "an unprecedented insight into the challenges faced" in breaking the record, from the first car being pieced together, through to the extreme acclimatisation, the heartache and the physical and emotional toll.

The documentary, named after 'Edith' the Porsche 911 that set the record, features narration by videographer Niko Myyrä, who was present for all three attempts. It also includes contributions from key members of the team, including Romain Dumas and Oliver Blume, chairman of the executive board of Porsche AG.

"For over four years we meticulously recorded every part of what transpired to be an incredible human adventure and technological achievement," said J.F. Musial, CEO of TangentVector.

"Many have tried to beat this record but very, very few have succeeded, and it became clear that there were good reasons it remained unbeaten for 16 years. This film captured the raw reality of what it takes – told by those who were there and the team who supported them."

The 50-minute documentary will premiere during Monterey Car Week that kicks off on Friday. The premiere will take place at the Golden State Theater in Monterey, with the record-breaking car making a special appearance.
