An all-new Volkswagen ID.4 by any other name is... an ID. Tiguan. Volkswagen is teasing a disguised but near-production-ready example of its "next generation SUV" ahead of the big reveal later this month.
It has confirmed the ID. Tiguan will replace the ID.4 and ID.5 and be sold alongside the existing Tiguan combustion models. So just like the ID.4/5 then and in fact, the prototype in the pictures could easily be an updated version of those outgoing models.
VW says the change to the well-established Tiguan badge for its family EV "is intended to provide customers with clear orientation and stands as a strong product brand for a clearly defined vehicle concept".
It follows the naming strategy of the ID. Polo and ID. Cross and, being polite as we can, signals that the whole "separate ID brand for EVs thing" really didn't fire.
Tiguan is current VW's top seller worldwide. “More than 8.3 million Tiguan vehicles produced demonstrate the strength and trust associated with this model name," says Thomas Schäfer, CEO Volkswagen Brand, Head of Brand Group Core and Member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG.
"The Tiguan represents a versatile, premium vehicle and embodies the essence of True Volkswagen. With the ID. Tiguan, we are carrying this product promise into the electric future."
In the past year alone, deliveries of the Tiguan and its larger sister model, Tayron, exceeded one million units. The ID.4/5 are small bratkartoffeln in comparison, although VW has still shifted 950,000 units since 2021.
