Volkswagen is preparing to put the GTI badge on its inaugural fully electric production car, starting with the near-production ID.3 GTI.
The 5-door hatchback is also set to become the most powerful production GTI in the badge's 50-year history. Its electric motor produces 240kW and 545Nm, with drive sent to the rear wheels rather than the front axle used by combustion-powered Golf GTI models.

Volkswagen forecasts the ID.3 GTI will accelerate from 0–100km/h in 5.6 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 200km/h.
Those figures place the focus squarely on accessible road performance rather than an unrestricted maximum speed. The instant-response electric drivetrain also gives Volkswagen a new way to deliver the punch expected from a GTI.

That performance is paired with a 79kWh net-capacity battery. The company is forecasting a driving range of up to 601km, while peak DC charging is listed at 183kW. Under Volkswagen's stated conditions, a 10–80% charge is expected to take 29 minutes.
The specifications show how Volkswagen intends to translate the GTI formula for an electric platform: strong straight-line performance and rear-wheel-drive dynamics, while retaining the everyday usefulness of a practical 5-door hatchback. It is a different technical layout from the familiar Golf GTI, but the emphasis remains on making performance usable beyond a weekend drive.

For now, every performance, range and charging figure is a preliminary European forecast rather than a final homologated result. Volkswagen says European pre-sales are planned to begin in early 2027, and the car is not yet on sale.
