Volkswagen has built a road-legal technology demonstrator to show how far careful engineering can stretch a relatively modest battery.

Called Mission Efficiency, the front-wheel-drive 2+2 completed a 1278.36km drive using 6.89kWh/100km, according to Volkswagen. That figure excludes charging losses; with those included, the reported result rises to 7.51kWh/100km.

Slippery shape, small energy bill

The car's battery stores 54.9kWh and feeds a 99kW motor. Volkswagen says it was charged once for the drive, yet arrived with another 164km showing on its range display.

Its headline trick is a drag coefficient of just 0.158, allowing the car to move through the air with minimal resistance. It is technically based on the MEB+ platform, while its 2+2 cabin and 481-litre luggage compartment suggest efficiency has not displaced everyday packaging entirely.

A solar roof can also contribute up to 30km of driving per day, although Volkswagen notes that result depends on conditions.

A lab result, not a showroom promise

Volkswagen has published an even lower consumption figure of 6.48kWh/100km, but that came from a separate idealised test. The car travelled at a constant 68km/h, encountered no uphill gradients and ran without auxiliary loads such as air conditioning.

The 6.89kWh/100km result belongs to the longer 1278.36km drive, while the 6.48kWh/100km figure shows what was possible under tightly controlled conditions.

Mission Efficiency is not offered for sale, and Volkswagen has not presented it as a future production model. Its value is as an engineering exercise: a demonstration that reducing drag and energy demand can extend range substantially without simply fitting a larger battery.
