Ahead of the official New Zealand launch next week, the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) has awarded all variants of the newest generation of Mitsubishi's workhorse - the Triton ute - a maximum five-star safety rating.

It also means the Mitsubishi joins rivals such as the Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger, Mazda BT-50, Isuzu D-Max, Holden Colorado and Volkswagen Amarok in achieving the maximum possible safety score.

Mitsubishi’s 2016 Triton benefits from the standard fitment of a comprehensive range of active and passive safety features, which includes dual front SRS, side and curtain airbags and a driver’s knee airbag.

Advanced seat belt reminders are fitted to all seats across its Single, Club and Double Cab model range, along with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA).

A reverse camera will be available as a standard feature on some variants and a genuine accessory on remaining models.

Full specification and model line-up details will be announced at the 2016 Mitsubishi Triton launch next week.
