  • BMW’s updated 7 Series arrives in New Zealand during Q4 2026.
  • The BMW 740 starts from $277,900 with 294kW output.
  • The electric i7 60 xDrive offers up to 727km WLTP range.

BMW’s updated 7 Series is heading to New Zealand in Q4 2026, bringing Neue Klasse technology, sharper luxury-car design and a choice of petrol or electric power.

Two variants will be offered locally: the petrol BMW 740 from $277,900 and the fully electric BMW i7 60 xDrive from $306,900. Both sit right at the top of BMW’s sedan range, which means plenty of tech, plenty of rear-seat theatre and, yes, plenty of grille.

Petrol or electric, both properly quick

The BMW 740 uses a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six with 48V mild-hybrid assistance and an eight-speed Steptronic transmission.

Local specification lists output at 294kW and 580Nm, with 0-100km/h taking 5.4 seconds and top speed capped at 250km/h.

The i7 60 xDrive takes the electric route, using dual motors and electric all-wheel drive. It produces 400kW and 745Nm, reaches 100km/h in 4.8 seconds and tops out at 240km/h.

The electric model gets a 112.5kWh net battery, a WLTP range of 581-727km and DC charging at up to 250kW. BMW says a 10-80% charge takes 28 minutes, while 10 minutes at maximum charging speed can add up to 235km of range.

Neue Klasse tech goes flagship

BMW says the updated 7 Series is the first luxury sedan to introduce Neue Klasse technologies across all drive systems.

The cabin brings BMW Panoramic iDrive with Operating System X, combining Panoramic Vision, a 3D head-up display and a 17.9-inch central screen.

There is also a new BMW Passenger Screen up front, while rear passengers can get the upgraded Theatre Screen with 8K streaming, gaming and connectivity.

A Bowers & Wilkins sound system with Dolby Atmos support is also included.

First Edition adds extra sparkle

The First Edition Package will be available for the first 12 months of production. It adds BMW Individual Merino leather with exclusive elements, or a wool-cashmere combination, plus 21-inch BMW Individual wheels and two-tone paintwork.

It costs $12,900 on the BMW 740 and is included at no extra charge on the i7 60 xDrive.

The i7 also gets extra standard kit, including automatic doors, Executive Lounge Seating, rear-seat entertainment and Adaptive Chassis Control Professional. The 740 counters with traditional straight-six charm and a slightly less eye-watering entry price.

Either way, BMW’s luxury flagship is arriving with more screens, more personalisation and a stronger claim as the brand’s rolling technology showcase.
