Mitsuoka is preparing to revisit the unlikely Californian inspiration behind its founding with the LA1, a compact roadster scheduled to make its debut in November 2026.
The Japanese coachbuilder’s official preview is deliberately light on detail, but rich in visual clues. Images show the LA1 in red, black, blue and white, with both open-roof and closed-roof configurations presented. Its proportions point to a small, traditional sports car, while the bodywork brings a distinct retro-American flavour without directly copying a particular model.
That approach connects the LA1 with company founder Susumu Mitsuoka’s early experience in Los Angeles. Mitsuoka describes the new car as an evolution of the kit-car inspiration that helped shape the business, turning a personal chapter from its past into a fresh design exercise.
CarBuzz reports that the LA1 is based on the Mazda MX-5, giving the project familiar roadster foundations beneath its bespoke appearance. Mitsuoka has not yet disclosed which MX-5 generation, specification or powertrain forms the basis of the car, however, so any deeper mechanical conclusions would be premature.
The company has also kept pricing, production volume and intended markets under wraps. New Zealand availability has not been disclosed, and the official preview does not confirm whether the LA1 will be a limited-run model or a continuing part of Mitsuoka’s range.
For now, the LA1’s appeal rests on its combination of recognisable roadster proportions, unusual styling and a genuine link to Mitsuoka’s origin story. The November reveal should establish whether this is primarily a nostalgic design statement or a more substantial addition to the company’s catalogue.
