Both full-size, it's just that one is far away. But you get the idea.

Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that it intends to build a smaller version of the G-Wagen, expanding and exploiting the model's place as an "undisputed icon of adventurous luxury".

Mercedes G-Class is downsizing.
Okay, Mercedes might not go this small. Be cool if it did.

The announcement came as part of an investor-relations presentation, in which the company outlined its strategy for growth and development across its portfolio.

For more details on the baby-G, we'll just have to wait. Nothing was shared on specific size or powertrain options. Combustion or electric? It could be both, as the company also discussed a new styling direction for its brand where it will "apply a coherent, status-oriented design across the entire portfolio and customers will primarily decide on a model – and then choose their preferred drive type".

This represents a huge change from the current strategy of very different designs for pure-electric and combustion vehicles; the current EQE and E-Class sedans, for example. However, the G-Class is already partly on track here: the petrol/diesel and new electric versions look virtually identical.

Mercedes-Benz says it plans to focus on the most promising segments and be ready to move with the market as the BEV share increases.

It identifies the G-Class as one of its most valuable luxury brands, along with Maybach ("the epitome of sophisticated luxury") and Mercedes-AMG ("the performance luxury brand", of which G-Class is also a part).

"The legendary G-Class family will be expanded with a new smaller version," says the report. "Mercedes-AMG plans to outgrow the performance market, thanks to a heavily refreshed model lineup from 2026 onwards and a strategic evolution of its portfolio, which will include a next-generation, high-tech electrified V8 and dedicated high-performance electric models based on AMG.EA".
