Retro revival: G-Class edition throws back to the 1980s.

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled a new collector’s edition of the G-Class, dubbed Edition Stronger Than the 1980s, paying tribute to the iconic W 460 series that kickstarted the model’s legacy in 1979.

Strictly limited to 460 units globally, the special edition targets die-hard enthusiasts with a meticulously curated retro-modern blend.

Available in G 450 d and G 500 configurations, the edition fuses 1980s-inspired styling with contemporary features and mechanicals.

Powertrains remain unchanged, with the G 450 d offering WLTP combined fuel consumption of 9.9 to 8.7 L/100 km, and the G 500 rated at 12.3 to 10.9 L/100 km. Both models sit in CO₂ class G.

Heritage paint, period-correct trim

Buyers can choose between three original-era paint colours - Manufaktur agave green, cream solid and Colorado beige - all matched with blacked-out bumpers, mirrors, grille, and underbody protection.

Distinctive 5-spoke alloy wheels and vintage-inspired indicators round out the throwback aesthetic, with subtle branding touches like the bonnet star with laurel wreath and a 1980s-style rear badge.

Equipment from the Professional Line Exterior package, including headlamp grilles, front and rear mud flaps, and optional roof rack, reinforces the G’s off-road credibility. A Manufaktur logo projection beneath the side mirrors displays the message: “G - Stronger Than Time”.

The cabin mixes period textures with modern equipment. Dove grey cloth inserts on black leather seats, a “Schockl Proved” heritage badge on the B-pillar, and laser-engraved “1 of 460” numbering ensure individuality.

The trim on the grab handle reads “Stronger Than the 1980s”, while the standard kit includes a glass sunroof, Nappa leather steering wheel and Burmester 3D audio.

With orders now open, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class Edition Stronger Than the 1980s starts from €160,055 in Europe (above NZ$300,000). It’s unlikely to reach New Zealand in volume, but for the right collector, it could be one for the import books.
