A Jaecoo New Zealand spokesperson has confirmed that the new J7 SUV, with plug-in hybrid power and an "estimated" range of 1200km, is a starter for the local market in April 2025.
Also just announced for Australia in January, the J7 PHEV employs what the brand calls a super hybrid system (SHS) that can run in pure-electric, series, parallel and energy-recovery modes. The terminology and technology is similar to that used by BYD in its Sealion 6 SUV and Shark 6 ute models.
The PHEV has a large 18.3kWh battery that gives a WLTP electric range of 90km. It can be recharged on public DC stations as well as home AC; using the former, a boost from 30-80% battery can be achieved in 20 minutes, says the company. It also features vehicle-to-load capability, meaning external devices can be powered by the car.
The J7 PHEV has a unique 1.5-litre petrol engine and dedicated hybrid transmission. In hybrid mode the WLTP fuel economy is 5.2l/100km.
Total outputs of 255kW/525Nm are a massive step up from the standard J7 petrol's 137kW/275Nm.
Prices and specification are yet to be announced, but expect a significant step up from the current $37,990-$43,990 range of the existing ICE version.
