The highly anticipated JAC T9 Ute is confirmed to launch in New Zealand in the coming months, introducing a formidable contender to the competitive local ute market.
Pronounced 'Jack', the vehicle’s no-nonsense approach mirrors its rugged performance, which has already been put to the test on a variety of Kiwi terrains.
According to Andrew Craw, JAC General Manager, the JAC T9 has faced New Zealand’s diverse landscapes head-on, from snow to sand and river crossings. “No surprises – it came up trumps,” says Craw, emphasising that the ute’s design has been specifically refined to meet the demands of New Zealand drivers. This ute is well-primed to become a staple in Kiwi households and worksites alike.
Built for safety and tough terrain
The T9 is powered by a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, delivering 125kW of power and 410Nm of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission from ZF and a Borg-Warner part-time dual-range transfer case.
The JAC T9 is not just about brawn.
With a five-star ANCAP safety rating, it boasts an impressive array of safety systems, making it as secure as it is durable. The ute is equipped with a range of safety features, including seven airbags, forward and rearward autonomous emergency braking (AEB), lane departure warning and blind-spot detection.
Performance and comfort haven’t been overlooked either, positioning this ute as a versatile option for both work and leisure. For off-road enthusiasts, the T9 offers an 800mm wading depth, 210mm ground clearance and features like an electrically activated rear differential lock.
In terms of towing, the T9 can pull 750kg unbraked and 3500kg braked, while carrying a payload of 1000kg. Its tray measures 1520mm long and 1590mm wide, making it suitable for heavy-duty tasks. Fuel consumption is estimated at 7.6L/100km, with CO₂ emissions of 202g/km, and it boasts a 76-litre fuel tank for long trips.
The vehicle also offers a modern interior, featuring a 7-inch digital dash and a 10.4-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The T9 comes with dual USB ports, a 220V AC socket in the rear and LED lighting throughout, including bi-LED headlights.
Having proven its mettle in Australia and South Africa, where over 300,000 units have already rolled off the factory line, the JAC T9 arrives with an established track record.
Built in China, the vehicle comes from a state-of-the-art facility, and it's expected to make a significant impact in New Zealand, where utes continue to dominate the market.
Backing up the launch is a strengthened nationwide dealer network. JAC Motors has expanded its coverage to ensure easy access for customers. Nine new dealerships are being added to complement the two existing ones in Auckland and Christchurch. From New Plymouth to Queenstown, JAC is ensuring that Kiwis up and down the country can access the new T9 easily
With the T9 ute joining JAC NZs existing line-up of electric and diesel-powered trucks in the country, it’s clear that the company is positioning itself for long-term growth in the region.
As Craw puts it, “We’re all jacked up and champing at the bit for the launch.” It’s clear that the JAC T9 is ready to shake up the Kiwi ute market, delivering a blend of performance, safety and practicality that will appeal to drivers across Aotearoa.
