Just last year, Volkswagen pulled the plug on the iconic Beetle, bringing the lengthy production run of 65 years to an end, after no less than 21 million models were made.

Fans of the iconic car may be able to dry their tears will news of Volkswagen reinstating the Beetle in pure electric form, something that wouldn't be outside the realms of possibility with the German brand's EV plans.

This news comes from a recent report out of Europe showing that a trademark application has been filed for the 'e-Beetle' nameplate with the European Intellectual Property Office.

It's hard to say at this point what the 'e-Beetle' is really about, as it's common practice for brands to secure monikers for future projects, or even just to keep the competition from taking them.

If you're familiar with Volkwagen's electric plan, you'll know that the iD range is set to be the most important line-up that the brand has ever released, with models spanning from city cars to seven-seat SUVs.

The e-Beetle hasn't been in any of these plans, but it could be offered as a quirky alternative to the iD.3, the fully-electric electric hatch that's set to replace the Golf.

On top of the Beetle trademark, VW is attempting to secure three other nameplates including the 'e-Golf Classic', the 'e-Karmann', and the 'e-Kubel'. These are all names that VW has used previously, with the Kubelwagon being the most interesting by far.

Take a look at the last time VW used the 'Kubel' nameplate:
