While Land Rover has mentioned that the Defender might get hydrogen power in the future, the British brand doesn't look to be in any hurry to turn this idea into a reality.
Those wanting a hard-core hydrogen-powered off-road SUV will get their wishes granted by Ineos, which has confirmed that the Grenadier will be getting fuel cell power.
The Grenadier FCEV concept will begin on and off-road testing in 2022, which will be the same time as when the regular SUV goes on sale internationally.
Unsurprisingly, this hydrogen-powered Grenadier comes as a result of Ineos' partnership with Hyundai. This deal between the two companies was signed in November 2020.
While the Grenadier is Ineos' first foray into the automotive segment, it is one of the world's biggest chemical companies, making around 300,000 tonnes of hydrogen each year.
Going forward, Ineos is reportedly looking at increasing the volume of green hydrogen that it produces, which is made from water using electrolysis powered by renewable energy.
With this in mind, Ineos CEO Jim Ratcliffe has issued a warning to the UK government.
"The issue is that industry can only do so much, and the UK government must start to invest in the development of our hydrogen infrastructure to allow the gas to be much more widely used. At the moment, we are massively lagging behind Europe and the gap is starting to grow."
