Cupra has unveiled its latest addition to the SUV market - the Cupra Terramar - an aggressively styled compact SUV that is ready to shake up Europe’s C-SUV segment.
Developed by the Spanish automaker and built on the same platform as the Volkswagen Tiguan, the Terramar is designed to deliver sportier driving dynamics and an electrified powertrain lineup, ensuring it stands out from its German cousin.
Stylish and assertive design
The Cupra Terramar brings a striking design language, with bold elements like sharp-edged headlights and full-width LED taillights, highlighting the SUV’s athletic appearance.
The large bumper intakes, a sculpted body and a sleek nose hint at its performance-oriented character. This distinctive look is enhanced by an illuminated badge that bridges the taillights, creating a cohesive and modern rear aesthetic.
The Terramar is available with a variety of alloy wheel sizes, from 18 to 20 inches, providing drivers with the opportunity to further personalise the SUV’s stance. The model pays homage to its Spanish roots, with its name referencing the historic Autòdrom de Sitges-Terramar, a legendary racing circuit near Barcelona.
Electrified powertrain options
Cupra’s newest SUV is more than just a pretty face, as it packs a punch under the bonnet. The Terramar offers a range of powertrain options, starting with a mild-hybrid 1.5-litre engine that produces 110kW.
For those seeking more performance, the non-electrified 2.0-litre TSI engine churns out either 150kW or 195kW, with power distributed through Cupra’s 4Drive all-wheel-drive system.
For eco-conscious buyers, the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions of the Terramar are particularly appealing. The PHEV models generate 150kW and 200kWp, delivering up to 100km of pure electric driving range. With support for DC fast charging at 50kW, Cupra ensures the electrified experience is as convenient as it is exciting.
Sport-tuned chassis
What truly sets the Cupra Terramar apart from its competitors is its focus on delivering an engaging driving experience. Cupra engineers have fine-tuned the SUV’s chassis, lowering the ride height by 10mm compared to similar MQB Evo platform-based models like the VW Tiguan.
Additionally, the inclusion of Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC), progressive steering, and Akebono brakes further enhances its sportiness.
Tech-focused interior
Inside, the Terramar boasts a tech-filled cabin with a sporty twist. A 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.9-inch infotainment system headline the array of modern conveniences, including an available Sennheiser 12-speaker audio system.
The use of upcycled materials in the cabin adds to Cupra’s sustainability efforts, offering both style and eco-friendliness.
A Spanish-born SUV with global appeal
Cupra takes pride in the fact that the Terramar was developed in Barcelona, with production set to take place at Audi’s Gyor plant in Hungary.
The SUV is slated for an early 2025 release, and Cupra enthusiasts can look forward to the special 'America’s Cup' edition, which features unique styling cues and is limited to 1337 units. A New Zealand release is yet unconfirmed, however.
Still, with its aggressive styling, electrified powertrain options and sport-tuned chassis, the Cupra Terramar is primed to carve out a space in the compact SUV market.Cupra Terramar: Spain’s Bold New SUV Set to Rival the VW Tiguan
