This pristine and historically significant Ferrari 250 GTO is gearing up to potentially shatter previous GTO auction records at the upcoming RM Sotheby's sale in November 2024.

Known for its illustrious racing pedigree, this model is one of the 34 GTOs adorned with the distinguished Tipo 1962 coachwork. Unlike its siblings housing a 3.0-litre V12 engine, this gem initially boasted a 4.0-litre V12 to conform to the 1962 competition regulations.

In its maiden race during the 1962 Nürburgring 1,000 Kilometres, the GTO clinched first in class and an admirable second place overall. With sights set on the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans, Ferrari enhanced its powertrain to a robust 287kW, alongside minor modifications like small driving lights below the turn signals on the fenders - a feature that remains intact to date.

Despite a promising start, securing the fourth position in qualifying, an engine overheating hiccup during the race thwarted further glory.

Post the Le Mans stint, Ferrari reverted the vehicle to its original 250 GTO specifications, eventually finding a home with a private racer. Over the decades, this four-wheeled marvel changed hands among aficionados, ultimately settling with an owner in Ohio in 1985.

This owner rekindled its racing spirit, participating in vintage racing events and clinching the Best-of-Show award at the 2011 Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance. The decision to auction this automobile marks the end of a 38-year ownership, making it an intriguing prospect for enthusiasts and collectors alike.

Auction anticipation

The forthcoming auction heralds a momentous occasion, as it's not merely a sale but an opportunity to own a fragment of automotive history. The auction house has teased an estimate exceeding US$60 million (around NZ$102 million), albeit industry whispers suggest figures nudging towards a staggering US$100 million (NZ$171 million).

With its rich lineage and rare factory-backed race history, the sky seems to be the limit for what this Ferrari 250 GTO could command at the auction block. The sale includes a trove of factory records, shedding light on its preparation for iconic races like Nürburgring and Le Mans and further sweetening the deal for potential bidders. The storied legacy and documented history of this GTO make it a coveted treasure, likely to incite a bidding war come 13 November 2024.
