BYD, the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) giant that dethroned Tesla in late 2023, is setting sail for new horizons with the arrival of its first cargo ship, the aptly named BYD Explorer No. 1

This landmark vessel, the first Chinese-built ship designed to export domestic EVs, sets its sights on Europe and beyond, marking a new era for Chinese car exports.

Bound for Europe

Delivered to Yantai Port on January 9th, Explorer No. 1 is an imposing figure, stretching 199.9m and boasting a capacity for a staggering 7000 vehicles. Owned by Zodiac Maritime but leased by BYD, this ship marks the inaugural addition to the company's "sea-going fleet."

The shipbuilder, China International Marine Containers Group (CIMC), described the move as a "new era" for Chinese vehicles.

Green credentials

Beyond its impressive size and cargo capacity, Explorer No. 1 champions sustainability with its use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as the primary fuel for its main engine and generators.

This "green and clean" fuel choice, facilitated by two sets of onboard LNG storage tanks, significantly reduces emissions, aligning with BYD's commitment to environmentally conscious practices.

Ambitious global EV powerhouse

BYD's foray into ship ownership reflects its meteoric rise as a global EV powerhouse. Already a leader in emerging markets like Thailand and Brazil, the company is rapidly expanding its footprint in Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and beyond.

This expansion is backed by a relentless pace of innovation. BYD recently unveiled several new models, including the luxurious Yangwang U7, an electric sedan boasting 750kW and a clear rival to Tesla's performance-oriented Model S Plaid.

But BYD isn't just targeting the luxury segment. The Sea Lion 07, another mid-size electric SUV designed by automotive maestro Wolfgang Egger, further highlights BYD's diverse and ambitious EV lineup.

A new chapter for Chinese auto exports

The arrival of the BYD Explorer No. 1 signifies a pivotal moment for the Chinese automotive industry.

China's potential as a major auto export nation, hinted at by its surpassing of Japan in 2023, gains further momentum with BYD's proactive approach.

With nearly 1.6 million all-electric vehicles sold in 2023 (and 3 million including plug-in hybrids), BYD is poised to solidify its global dominance in 2024.
