Big battery, brief charging stops

  • BYD’s seven-seat Atto 8 pairs a 115kWh battery with claimed WLTP range of up to 653km.
  • Flash Charging promises a 10–97% charge in nine minutes when connected to compatible charging infrastructure.
  • European sales are planned for early 2027, with rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions offering different power outputs.

BYD’s new Atto 8 brings seven seats and a 115kWh battery to Europe, with a claimed charging time that could make stops much shorter. Unveiled at the Paris motor show, the large electric SUV is scheduled to go on sale there in the first quarter of 2027.

BYD says its Flash Charging system can take the battery from 10–70% in five minutes, or from 10–97% in nine minutes. Those figures depend on compatible Flash stations, so the charging network will be as important as the vehicle’s hardware. The company plans to install 3000 of those stations across Europe by the end of 2027.

A large battery and two drive options

Both versions use BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery. The Design model drives the rear wheels with 340kW and 365Nm, reaching 100km/h from rest in a claimed 8.0 seconds. BYD lists its WLTP range at 653km.

The Excellence adds all-wheel drive and lifts output to 570kW and 775Nm, cutting the claimed 0–100km/h time to 4.6 seconds. Its listed range is 602km. Those range figures remain manufacturer claims, with consumption and emissions testing still underway.

The Atto 8 measures 5040mm long, 1996mm wide and 1760mm tall. At just over five metres long, it has room for three rows, plus a 136-litre front luggage compartment.

Space for passengers and their luggage

With every seat in use, the boot holds 270 litres. Folding the middle and rear rows expands that to 1960 litres, giving buyers a choice between carrying a full complement of passengers and loading larger items.

The front seats and outer second-row seats have heating, ventilation and massage functions, while tri-zone climate control allows separate temperature settings. A 15.6-inch central screen has Google built in, alongside wireless phone charging and a front fridge that can cool or warm its contents.
