Armour meets plug-in hybrid luxury

  • BMW’s Concept 7 Protection combines discreet body armour with a plug-in hybrid luxury saloon platform.
  • Its new BayB certification covers defined handgun threats, below the existing 7 Series Protection’s higher protection levels.
  • Ballistic glass and overlapping protective materials accompany an intercom, attack alarm and extensive rear-seat equipment.

BMW has built handgun protection into a saloon designed to look much like an ordinary 7 Series.

Revealed on 12 October, the Concept 7 Protection combines armour concealed beneath familiar bodywork with the M760e xDrive’s plug-in hybrid platform.

The concept sits below BMW’s existing 7 Series Protection, which offers VR9 protection with optional VPAM 10 capability. Its certification to the new BayB standard covers defined handgun threats, including 9x19mm and .44 Magnum ammunition.

Thicker ballistic glass, steel and fibre composites provide the protection, with overlapping sections around the doors, glazing and body addressing vulnerable junctions. Additional armour sits behind the rear triangular windows, while a protective rear bulkhead separates the cabin from the boot.

Steel and composite material sit beneath the glass roof, with the sunblind permanently closed. The side windows retain electric operation, although the thicker glass means they cannot open fully.

An intercom lets occupants speak to people outside without opening a window. An attack alarm adds visual and audible signals, while BMW has recalibrated the chassis, brakes and driver assistance systems for the extra weight.

The concept uses the M760e xDrive as its basis. That donor model’s plug-in hybrid system combines a 3.0-litre inline-six petrol engine with an electric motor integrated into an eight-speed automatic transmission, driving all four wheels. Combined output is 450kW and 800Nm.

Inside, Smoke White Merino leather and Alcantara accompany electric sunblinds and a digital rear-view mirror. A new BMW Individual rear console has a folding table, cool box and wireless charging tray.

BMW plans to offer the rear console for the 7 Series in the second half of 2027. The protected car remains a concept, with no production launch confirmed.

BMW is considering the Concept 7 Protection as an addition to its security-car range, initially aimed at selected European markets.
