Following on from the success of the 2016 event, Bangers to Bluff charity run will return from March to April this year.

Up to 20 entries are being accepted into the event that’ll begin in Auckland on March 29, finishing in Invercargill on April 8.

Organised by the Rotarty Club of Half Moon Bay (RCHMB), the fun fund run aims to raise money for Alzheimer’s New Zealand and the Hopeworks Foundatoin.

The concept is to buy a four-door ‘Banger’ for under $1000 with a current registration and WOF, then travel a prescribed route using roads less traveled from Auckland to Bluff, passing iconic land makers every step of the way.

“We try to stay off the main thoroughfares so that people can see a bit of the backside of New Zealand,” said Ian Thomsen, spokesperson for the Rotary Club of Half Moon Bay.

When the car’s arrive in Invercargill they will auctioned off (or brought back at pre-agreed price) with all proceeds going to RCHMB Charitable Trust.

Inspired by the Top Gear TV show, the organisers have also arranged a variety of challenges along the way, with points and prizes awarded for winning teams at the end of the trip.

Last year Bangers to Bluff raised a considerable amount of money for the two charities, clocking in just shy of $40,000 during the course of the event. In 2017 they’re aiming for a minimum of $50,000.
