Millions rattling around UK gloveboxes

UK motorists have $6.24 on average stored somewhere in their car

Keeping some loose change in the car always comes in handy - you never know when you might need a quick snack, an emergency top-up of fuel or to pay a toll charge you'd forgotten about.

And according to a new study, the average motorist has $6.24 somewhere in their car, be it in a cup holder or lodged down the back of a seat.

So, based on there being 30,200 cars on the road in the UK, that means UK drivers are storing a total of almost $200 million in their cars right now.

This is what a new survey from the ride-sharing company BlaBlaCar, which says UK drivers could club their funds together and buy 374 Ferrari 458 supercars, four or the world's most expensive flat at One Hyde Park or three Big Mac burgers for each person in London.

It's almost twice as much as could be hiding underneath sofas and cushions, after the Halifax estimated $100 million worth of loose change was down the back of UK settees in 2010.

With that amount of money rattling around the interiors of cars, manufacturers might want to think about having the coin-tray make a comeback.

'Every penny counts when trying to save money on travel, so our gloveboxes are a great place to look for long-forgotten cash.' 

The car-sharing service also asked the 1,000 drivers it quizzed about what else they keep in their car.

It asked motorists what they have in their gloveboxes, with the most common response being old CDs and mixtapes.

Almost a third said they were sentimental about throwing away their music, refusing to let go of power ballads or mixtapes made by old flames.

The second most common glovebox treasure was mints, with 22 per cent saying they have a pack of tin hidden away.

In third, and possibly the most surprising contents found in a glovebox, is gloves. Of the motorists surveyed, 15 per cent said they use the storage namesake appropriately.
