Drag racer Gary Densham goes bang in NHRA season opener, was uninjured
Assuming my pie-fueled body even makes it to the ripe age of 69, I imagine it's likely to be a life of shaking my fist at youths on television, while surviving on a diet of Werther's Originals and Earl Grey tea.
That obviously wasn't how Gary Densham envisioned his 69th year on planet Earth, with the NHRA veteran still screaming down drag strips across America. However, his most recent event in Pomona, California, would prove to be one to forget.
After squeezing a career-best 4.050, and hitting an incredible 307.3mph — or a blinding 495kph in the metric language — Densham's parachute failed to open, resulting in a rather horrific run through the sand trap and into Pomona's protective netting.
Thankfully, Densham was OK after the incident. Sadly the same can't be said for his car ...
