Nissan has given its third-generation Leaf the full Nismo treatment, launching a faster, more focused version of the electric hatchback in Japan.
The Leaf Nismo went on sale there this week in two forms. The B7 Nismo produces 160kW and 355Nm, while the B5 Nismo delivers 130kW and 345Nm.
Straight-line performance is only part of the overhaul.
Nismo has fitted model-specific springs and stabilisers, selected member bushes and swing-valve dampers. The car also rides on 19-inch Enkei wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 5 tyres.
Its Standard, Eco and Sport drive modes have been retuned, with Sport replaced by a dedicated Nismo Mode.
Nissan says this is also the first Nismo electric vehicle to feature regenerative braking control paddles, giving drivers four levels to choose from.
The visual changes have a functional purpose. Air-guide corner finishers, lower door finishers and a boat-hull rear under-spoiler work with an extended ducktail at the rear.
Together, those additions manage airflow around the car's corners, sides, underbody and tail. Nissan says the package generates more downforce than the regular Leaf without increasing drag.
Buyers can choose from six exterior colours. Inside, the familiar Nismo black-and-red theme is paired with a TailorFit-trimmed steering wheel, while Nismo-tuned Recaro seats are available as an option.
For now, the sharper Leaf is strictly a Japanese-market proposition. Nissan has not disclosed New Zealand availability, pricing or launch timing, so local buyers keen on a factory-fettled electric Nismo will have to wait and see.
