BYD is set to refresh its popular Dolphin electric vehicle (EV) with a mid-cycle facelift, marking the first substantial update since its 2021 debut.

The 2026 model, slated for release next year, introduces refined styling, updated dimensions and a new mid-spec powertrain option.

The updated BYD Dolphin showcases notable design enhancements, particularly on the hatchback's front fascia. Newly styled headlights extend into the fenders, complemented by a slimmer grille and reduced air intakes, giving the EV a more polished appearance.

The profile remains largely unchanged, save for the introduction of new 16-inch and 17-inch alloy wheel designs. At the rear, the refreshed bumper and revised taillight graphics align the Dolphin closer to the aesthetic of the BYD Seal 06 GT.

Measuring 4280mm in length, 1770mm in width, and 1570mm in height, with a 2700mm wheelbase, the facelifted Dolphin is slightly larger than its predecessor. It grows 155mm longer than the original Chinese-spec model and is just 10mm shorter than the global-spec variant launched in 2023.

The facelift introduces a new mid-range powertrain option, bridging the gap between existing configurations. Buyers can choose from three outputs: 70kW, 130kW, and 150kW.

The first and third options carry over from the current lineup, while the 130kW motor offers a fresh alternative for those seeking a balance of power and efficiency.

Powering the Dolphin is BYD’s Blade LFP battery technology, available in two capacities: 44.93kWh and 60.48kWh. These deliver CLTC ranges of 420km and 520km, respectively, matching the performance of the existing model.

The facelifted Dolphin is expected to hit the Chinese market in mid-to-late 2025. Currently priced between ¥99,800 and ¥129,800 in China (around NZ$23,700 to NZ$30,800), the Dolphin’s affordability has contributed to its global appeal, with competitive pricing even in New Zealand (starts at $43,990).

The updates position the BYD Dolphin as a stronger contender in the electric hatchback market, appealing to urban drivers seeking an efficient, stylish and compact EV.
