You drive a 1990 BMW E34 M5?

I purchased the M5 in 2014 and it's a 5-speed manual in sterling silver metallic. No modifications, the interior is special because it has full Nappa leather centre console, door cards and lower dash. My car has only done a mere 65,000km.

Why a BMW?

The simple recipe of a powerful engine driving the rear wheels through a manual box. BMW started the concept of its best M engine dropped into a regular saloon.

Tell us about that S38b36 power plant?

The S38b36 is one of the all-time great inline 6-cylinder engines; individual throttle bodies feed every cylinder.

How does this car fit your personality?

It's understated. The M5 doesn't stand out in the crowd and looks like a regular E34 5 series unless you know what the M5 badge means.

Is this the only vehicle you own?

We use an Opel Astra for general duties.

How often do you clean it?

I clean and wax it on a regular basis because it's a garage queen under a dust cover.

Who else is allowed to drive your BMW?

Only my 27-year-old son is capable of driving it due to the old-school heavy clutch and accelerator .

What do you keep in your car?

A full tank of fuel and an extra can in the boot; it drinks faster than a boys' pub crawl!

First car you owned?

A 1972 Toyota Corona in the late 70s when I was growing up in Henderson, West Auckland. I liked it because it was reliable.

Your dream car?

The Gordon Murray-designed McLaren F1 because it is unique.

Favourite car colour?

BMW Diamond Black.

Who taught you to drive?

I learned at a driving school in Henderson when I was about 17 years old. He was a very good teacher because I grasped the concept of engine braking through the manual gearbox.

Do you prefer manual or automatic?

Manual for old-school performance cars because you can use the gearbox to engine brake to match driving conditions without applying the brake.

Most memorable road trip?

My wife and I went to Croatia in 2014 and drove a new Opel Astra rental car from Dubrovnik to Orebic. We enjoyed the coastal scenery and challenging roads.

If you could go on a road trip anywhere, with any celebrity?

I don't do celebrities but an autobahn blast with Gordon Murray in his McLaren would be educational.

Do you enjoy driving or would you rather be a passenger?

I enjoy the driver's seat.

And what do you listen to in your car?

The S38b36 power plant.

What's a great day trip out of Auckland?

Omaha Beach is only an hour away to visit friends.

Do you judge people by what they drive?

You can't judge people by a simple car, that's silly.

Are you a fan of hi-tech, or more old-school?

Technology has become distorted in a lot of new cars; they are loaded with electronic systems that do everything but in reality you don't need it. Complex engineering components made of recyclable materials that literally fall apart after X amount of time. The best part of technology in new cars is their crash worthiness.

Would you travel in a driverless car?

Driverless cars are in their infancy and dependent on electronics and software. Would I hop in one? No one knows the future.

Auckland City's congestion, how can this be fixed?

Underground rail like Manhattan and London; you won't like the bill.

Special number plate?

It's the original registration plate.
