It’s been a busy year for large luxury SUVs with new Audi Q7, Volvo XC 90 and heavily revised Mercedes-Benz GLE arrivals among the stars.
For me, the big Volvo XC90 gets the nod because it sets out to do things a little differently and makes use of Swedish design heritage to deliver seating comfort, a brilliant interior, simplified connectivity solutions, clever safety technologies, plus a personality that contrasts the German rivals.
It also showcases how much potential remains for improvement of combustion engine efficiency with new 2-litre four-cylinder petrol and diesel turbo engines doing convincing work in a hefty seven-seater SUV.
