What were your needs when you bought this car? Has it fulfilled those needs?

We were looking for a car for 2 empty nesters. Needed to be able to carry 2-4 people in comfort - and a dog! Wanted something modern, cheap to run and not too big - 90% of our driving is around town. It has been brilliant. Charging is so easy - and we can trickle charge overnight. We have changed to an EV plan with our power supplier - we can get 400km for less than $7.20 now. Car itself is modern and easy to drive. Instant lowdown torque is great for round town. And on smooth roads it is eerily quiet. We did an early trip to Wellington and it showed itself to be fantastic on long trips too, with plenty of range and power to overtake if required. Absolutely no hassle charging on the long trip either.

What were your initial thoughts about the car? Tell us why it appealed to you.

I'd done a lot of research before buying. I was pleasantly surprised by the build quality, and the range and efficiency quickly dispelled any range anxiety.

What have you discovered since owning the car?

It will trickle charge a lot more overnight than I thought. And I've very quickly become used to the on-board screen and electronic controls - very simple. I've also been surprised at how useful the voice controls are for simple things like operating windows and the air conditioning.

What do you like/dislike about the car?

The only dislike - the boot is a little small for golf clubs! First world problem.... :-) We just put a seat down. Only 2 issues! It transpires that the windscreen wipers don't fold up - so difficult to clean the bottom of the windscreen. Again- first world problem. Secondly- the physical key has a very narrow channel for threading into a key ring. Almost impossible in fact - so I'll be using the new app.

Any other comments on the car?

Fantastic- would definitely buy again. And huge raps to the sales and support team at BYD - it has been a fun experience.

Has it fulfilled those needs? We had a 2014 Nissan Leaf for 3 years which was written off in an accident, so was looking for a replacement EV. Buying another 2014 leaf seemed a bit crazy so I looked at 2nd hand 2018 Leaf's. They still had a relatively short range (about 200Km). Decided that to "future proof" us for the next 5+ years we should get a car that was spacious, range over 300+Km range, that we could take away on road trips, weekends away or trips from Wellington to Whangarei. Yes, the Atto has fulfilled those needs. Took it from Wellington to Whangarei at Christmas. What were your initial thoughts about the car? Tell us why it appealed to you. Very easy to drive, has the standard controls, with the low regen it's just like driving a petrol car as opposed to a single pedal EV. Controls are quite intuitive. Really liked the heads up display. Apart from it's quirky interior, it had loads of features, good battery warranty, over the air updates. Was a lot cheaper than the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y. What have you discovered since owning the car? 1. Suspension is a bit soft and you get bounced around inside when going 110Kph when fully loaded on Waikato expressway. 2. I'm about 110Kg and I find the "wings" on the drivers seat a bit tight and they become uncomfortable after a few hours. 3. Lane departure warning constantly goes off and is inaccurate. 4. Air conditioning takes a bit switching back and forth from hot to cold. 5. Roomy car for front and back passengers 6. Great to have range of about 350Km, the extra range means we can go in and out of Wellington (65Km round trip) then to Upper Hutt (50Km round trip) and still not have to worry about charging that night 7. Easy to drive but would like a few more features and higher DC charging speeds 8. Shorter people have an issue with the position of the headrest as it pushed their head forward. 9. Great camera when reversing 10. Love having adaptive cruise control, and lane assist, although both could have refinements. What do you like/dislike about the car? Dislikes: 1. Wings on front seats are uncomfortable for larger people, headrest not great for shorter people 2. Lane departure warning and auto correction, seem to engage even when not required 3. Air conditioning 4. No auto windscreen wipers 5. Sometimes unable to switch from Apple Carplay back to DLINK. Have to press camera button on setting wheel then the home button on the screen. 6. No Frunk - would be great to store charging cables. Likes: 1. Range 2. Price when we brought it 3. Easy to drive 4. Over the air updates 5. Blind spot alert in mirrors 6. Spacious 7. Sunroof - having the blind open gives the feeling of more room for those in the back 8. Controls on the steering wheel 9. Vehicle to Load cable 10. Heads up display Any other comments on the car? Overall it's a great car for the money and having a car with 350Km range is awesome. The seats are probably the most annoying aspect for me. It's a great car for around town and the one charge and go longer distance trips, even though the seats are uncomfortable on longer journeys. But when doing a trip that requires 2 chargers having a slower DC charging rate adds additional time to an already long journey. A Rotorua to Porirua trip home at Christmas required a 40 minute charge in Waioru. Reliability 5 Features/technology 4 Performance/economy 4 Value for money 5 Overall rating 4 Lastly, would you buy this vehicle again? No Why would/wouldn't you buy it again? Seat comfort is probably the main driver for not buying this again. With the price of this going up and the price of the Tesla Model 3 coming down I think I would spend the extra money and buy the Model 3. I would miss the hatchback and extra space you get but the Tesla has a few extra features that make it more appealing. 1. More efficient 2. Faster charging speed 3. More comfortable seats 4. Remember driving positions of multiple drivers It would be a tough call though as I feel this is a great sized car for around town and those short 200Km day trips (Porirua to Waitarere). It's the longer 400Km+ trips where this loses a bit.

Has it fulfilled those needs? 400km + range Full EV 5 seat Reasonable boot space Range depends very much on terrain and how you drive, other than that it meets all our other needs. What were your initial thoughts about the car? Tell us why it appealed to you. Quirky Nice to drive Simple to operate Liked the design Met our range expectations We poured over reviews for the BYD, Opel Mokka, MG and other cars at the low end. BYD seemed the best at the time. What have you discovered since owning the car? Never ever run the battery to flat. A little awkward finding all the vehicle settings Could do with a larger battery and another 100km or so range So far it's been excellent no faults and still drives like the day we picked it up What do you like/dislike about the car? Likes We are still discovering tricks and settings that improve the car especially after an operating system upgrade. Like the way it drives handles and stops. It isn't a sports car but is an honest family car. Voice control is good. Sun roof excellent The app is great for getting the interior hot/cool before you get in and great for monitoring charging. Learnt how to stretch the range and not invoke range anxiety. Dislikes: Front screen fogs up and is hard to clear on cool mornings and the A/C is not powerful enough and heating marginal. Cruise control is unusable. It jumps on and off the power way too aggressively and gives a jerky ride bad enough to give us sore necks. Lane assist is equally appalling. Pushes the steering quite powerfully and at times dangerously. We can turn this crap off but it always resets and is permanently on when using cruise control. It may work on 3 lane motorways but NOT on the narrow bumpy country roads of Taranaki. Any other comments on the car? EV is not as cheap as we expected but significantly better than our ICE Mazda was. RUC will make a significant dent in the operating viability possibly making HEV the better option. EV owners are being screwed by Chargenet price of 85c per kWh when household rates are 25-30c per kWh. We recomend a home wall charger that makes EV viable as a commuter. No Why would/wouldn't you buy it again? There are better options out now with better range and sharper pricing. We would still go EV despite the RUC cost and maybe still BYD but not the Atto3.
