It’s a 1988 17-tonne Volvo truck covered in graffiti but it’s expected to sell at the Bonham auction on September 14 for nearly $3 million dollars. You read that correct, $3 million.
But what makes the truck so special is the graffiti is by British artist Banksy.and the work is called entitled Turbo Zone Truck (Laugh Now But One Day We'll Be in Charge), from 2000.
It is the largest-ever work created by Banksy, with a painted surface area of 80 square metres.
It is due to go under the hammer at the Goodwood revival sale and experts believe it will sell for as much as £1.5million (NZ$2.87m).
Banksy was at an open-air party on a Spanish hillside to celebrate the millennium, when he was presented with the Volvo FL6 by Mojo, the co-founder of Turbozone International Circus, a touring company known for its extravagant pyrotechnics.
Banksy – then an obscure graffiti artist – started on this 'blank canvas' during the party and continued to work on it for the following two weeks. The truck with Banksy's artwork then spent the next years travelling throughout Europe and as far away as South America as part of the transport for Turbozone's critically acclaimed Cinderella show.
The Goodwood revival sale also includes a 1961 Aston Martin DB4GT and a 1935 Bugatti Type 57, which are both estimated to achieve significant seven-figure sums.
But the FL6 box truck is likely to steal the show, attracting the interest of art collectors as well as vintage car enthusiasts.
