With production of the Beetle coming to an end in 2019, we asked four Beetle owners to tell us what they love most about their iconic cars.
My Goldie is a New Zealand icon. She draws smiles and waves wherever we go. People film her while driving on the motorway and she strikes up conversations wherever we park. The simplicity of her design, the basic flat-four air-cooled engine and the sheer love and following of Beetles worldwide is astounding.
Goldie has appeared in the NZ Wearable World of Arts Museum. She has appeared in the History of NZ Volkswagens, written by Philip Coyle and on the second to last page of Steve Reid's latest book "VWs Down Under.” She has her minimal rust to thank for her fame; she looks pretty good for a 64-year-old car!
No other car has or ever will be as unique, draw as much attention or provide their owners with amazing experiences and the opportunity to make life-long friends. For these reasons, no other car leaves such a big hole in the world since its production has ceased. There’s no way I could ever sell Goldie.
