Volvo is doubling down on plug-in hybrid power with the debut of the new XC70: its first extended-range plug-in hybrid and the longest-range PHEV the company has produced to date.
Built on Volvo’s new Scalable Modular Architecture (SMA), the XC70 can travel up to 200km in pure electric mode - but that figure is based on China’s CLTC test cycle, so expect WLTP numbers to be a little more conservative when (or if) it heads to other markets.
China gets first dibs, with the SUV set to go on sale there later this year. Other markets remain under consideration.
Stretching legs, bridging gaps
According to Volvo boss Hakan Samuelsson, the XC70 is a strategic pivot into “extended-range plug-in hybrid” territory - a segment the brand sees as a bridge for buyers still warming to full EVs.
“The XC70 marks our strategic entry into the extended-range plug-in hybrid segment, a perfect bridge to full electrification,” he said. “It enables us to maintain and develop a balanced product portfolio, while offering a highly attractive alternative to customers who are not yet ready for fully electric cars.”
The hybrid setup is paired with fast-charging capability and a combustion engine for long-distance flexibility - a formula aimed squarely at urban commutes during the week and motorway hauls on weekends.
But while Volvo’s wording hints at extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) territory, the XC70 is likely a conventional plug-in hybrid with a combustion engine that contributes direct drive, rather than acting purely as a generator like a true EREV.
Back with a badge you’ll recognise
This new XC70 resurrects a familiar nameplate, but unlike the rugged wagon of old, it now rides in mid-size SUV territory. Think of it as a roomier, more tech-laden sibling to the XC60.
Design-wise, it’s all sleek Scandinavian confidence. The front end wears a closed grille inspired by Volvo’s EVs, with an active grille shutter to boost aerodynamic efficiency and extend range.
Thor’s Hammer lights are evolved and made even bolder, now paired with Matrix LED tech that adapts to traffic in real time. Out back, the clean lines continue with C-shaped rear lights set flush into the glass for a modern finish.
Volvo is keeping full powertrain specs under wraps for now but promises more detail closer to launch.
