Volkswagen has given one of its best-known nameplates an electric future.
The new ID. Polo has made its world premiere as the all-electric successor to a model line that has sold more than 20 million units globally.
This time, though, the small hatch has been reworked around Volkswagen’s MEB+ platform, bringing EV packaging, fresh tech and a starting price of €24,995 (around NZ$50K) in Germany.
Small car, bigger thinking

Despite its city-friendly footprint, the ID. Polo is pitched as more than basic transport.
It measures 4053mm long, 1816mm wide and 1530mm tall, with a 2600mm wheelbase.

That front-wheel-drive EV layout helps unlock more cabin and boot space than before.
Luggage capacity rises to 441 litres, up 25% over the combustion Polo, and expands to 1240 litres with the rear seats folded.
Three outputs, two batteries

Volkswagen will offer the ID. Polo with three power outputs: 85kW, 99kW and 155kW.
The two lower-output versions use a 37kWh LFP battery, offering up to 329km of WLTP range and 10-80 percent DC charging in around 23 minutes.

The 155kW model gets a 52kWh NMC battery, stretching range to 455km and cutting the same charging window to roughly 24 minutes.
One-pedal driving is standard, while vehicle-to-load capability allows the car to power external devices at up to 3.6kW. Handy for e-bikes, camping gear or smugly rescuing someone’s flat laptop.
Buttons are back

Inside, Volkswagen has clearly listened to some familiar complaints.
The ID. Polo gets a 10-inch Digital Cockpit, a 13-inch Innovision infotainment screen and, crucially, physical controls for key functions.

The cabin also includes playful details such as a retro-style display inspired by the Golf I facelift.
Higher trims bring features usually found in larger cars, including IQ.Light LED matrix headlights, Harman Kardon audio, a panoramic glass roof and even a pneumatic massage function for the 12-way adjustable front seats.
Tech from above

Driver assistance also moves up a class. Connected Travel Assist with traffic light recognition is available optionally, while standard kit includes systems such as Lane Assist, Side Assist and Emergency Assist.
Pre-sales have started in Germany, with the 155kW ID. Polo Life launching first from €33,795 (about $67,600). The cheaper base model and more variants will follow in summer.
