West Coast welcomes Variety Bash
Greymouth mayor Tony Kokshoorn greeted the Bash at Grey Main School – he’s a fan after several visits in previous years conducted working bees and gave grants and bikes in an area that has struggled in recent years. Kokshoorn said the last coal mine had just closed, but the community remains upbeat, still, he thanked the Bash for helping put smiles on as many kids faces as possible this morning.
He flagged the convoy away, now split to visit as many local schools as possible – with a working bee at tiny Blackball School to plant fruit trees, fix plumbing and shift gravel.
Then it was the long haul across the Arthurs Pass, via a stop at Lake Coleridge before overnighting at Methven.
More breakdowns today, with the AA working on the Mooloo truck, and the Seuss Subbus spending the night up on jacks at a local garage with the AA service crew and Air Force boys putting in a late-nighter to get it running again.
The Bash will stop at schools down the coast today(Friday), giving away bicycles to schools before finishing in the Caroline Bay Sound Shell in Timaru, at 3.30pm.
