Toyota New Zealand is relaunching a new generation Hiace van, with what it describes as the biggest changes in the model's 50-year history.

The new model will have a 'semi-bonnet' design, and Toyota promises a longer wheelbase, improved safety and comfort and more storage space in the new models, which go on sale in May.

Toyota New Zealand general manager new vehicles and product, Neeraj Lala, said the current Hiace models had been on sale for 15 years.

“This new generation Hiace is a breakthrough vehicle with a new shape, comprehensive safety features and amazing versatility," he said.

The semi-bonnet design meant the front wheels were positioned ahead of the front seats for increased quietness and comfort.

"The semi-bonnet also means the new generation’s interior space has been revised to give more storage space up front for those trade essentials," he said.

Other major improvements included a longer wheelbase for better straight-line performance and overall stability.

The new Hiace was wider and longer, but with a new drivetrain and platform it receives increases to payload and towing capacities across the range allowing for greater cargo flexibility.

Safety features would include a Pre-Collision system with Autonomous Emergency Braking for vehicles, pedestrians and bicycles, Lane Departure Alert with brake control, Road Sign Assist and Automatic High Beam would be available as part of the Toyota Safety Sense package.

“Hiace has been a faithful partner in cargo and people transporter for decades," he said.

One thing that makes Hiace so popular is its customisation and reliability.

Owners needed a van that could be modified to meet any need, no matter how unique.

The Hiace range would include a variety of seating layouts to meet the diverse needs of owners, drivers and passengers.
