Toyota has introduced the RAV-X, a bold new concept vehicle positioned to challenge conventions in the medium SUV category.

Revealed at the 2024 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, the RAV-X reimagines Toyota’s popular RAV4 as a robust off-road vehicle designed to tackle extreme environments.

The concept is inspired by Dakar Rally endurance vehicles and aims to broaden the appeal of Toyota’s medium SUV line, with Toyota’s Service Parts and Accessories Development (SPAD) team at the helm.

Built on the 2024 RAV4 plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) platform, the RAV-X concept leverages its 225kW hybrid powertrain, alongside an enhanced RAM air intake, for added off-road performance.

With its battery positioned low within the chassis, the RAV-X maintains a lower centre of gravity than typical off-road vehicles, optimising stability across rough terrain.

“The vision behind the RAV-X was to create a halo vehicle concept for the RAV4 lineup,” explained Jakin Wilson, senior engineering manager at SPAD.

By rethinking the RAV4’s layout, SPAD maximised off-road dynamics while preserving its daily functionality.

SPAD equipped the RAV-X with custom-designed long-travel suspension, boosting ground clearance by 51mm and widening the track by 160mm.

Adjustable 2.5-inch internal bypass shocks were added at both ends, with Dual Speed Compression adjustments for fine-tuning shock absorption, supporting the vehicle’s handling at high speeds across varied terrain.

Forged aluminium lower control arms and rear upper supports reinforce the suspension for sustained off-road use.

Style meets substance

With a Dakar-inspired front bumper, high-clearance skid plates, and raised rocker panels, the RAV-X's exterior emphasises function over flair, enhancing both airflow and durability.

The aggressive front-end design integrates cooling ducts, while flared fenders with ventilation help reduce pressure around the wheel wells.

The SPAD team selected 17×8.5-inch forged aluminium wheels paired with 265/65R17 tyres, increasing both approach and departure angles for more demanding off-road paths.

Further enhancing its rugged appeal, the RAV-X concept sports a dual exhaust integrated into the high-clearance rear bumper and a prominent rear spoiler to complete its aerodynamic profile.

“This Toyota RAV-X is more than just a concept; it’s a bold statement of what’s possible when innovation meets performance,” noted Mike Tripp, group vice president of Toyota Division Marketing.
