New trailer revealed for Gran Turismo Sport
Gaming and reality are slowly but surely merging into one. Virtual reality technology is turning the common lounge room into everything from a warzone, to a fast-food restaurant, to — indeed — a race car.
Yes motoring and motorsport is perhaps feeling the effects of these advances more than anything else. Real-world race drivers are using games as simulators to keep their minds sharp between races. Hell, race teams like Mercedes-Benz's Formula 1 outfit have their own purpose-built simulators to help with development.
And the latest Gran Turismo release, titled 'Sport', takes this idea even further, via two in-game championships that will be certified by the flippin’ FIA.
But it's the rather remarkable graphics that take center stage in the game's latest trailer, which you can view above.
It's not just the HDR, incredible frame rate, and 4K capabilities that impress. It's also the dumb little things that simply don't need to be there — but are. The track-side photographers chimping, the deep fissures in the Tarmac on the front straight of the fictional Northern Isle Speedway, the way the light plays with smoke and kicked-up dust, the pit-lane animations — it all adds up to what might just be the most gorgeous racing game ever made.
Followers of the franchise however will know that looks have always been one of GT's strengths. It's sound effects, mainly car noise, that has always been their weakness. Thankfully sound appears to have been improved for Sport, if the trailer is anything to go by. However with new entries to the segment like Project Cars setting the audio bar for sound astronomically high, time will tell if GT can keep up.
So when will it be up for sale? Nobody knows. Next year sometime — most likely late.
